The Fairy Tern is one of the smallest of the tern species and spends its life around Australia’s southern and western shores. Fairy Terns nest on beaches, islands and estuaries, typically in colonies. At least one parent stays with the chicks while the other parent is out at sea, diving for fish. As colonial nesters, a single event (such as a storm, off-leash dog or predator) can wipe out all the nests in one go.
