The Mallee Emu-wren Stipiturus mallee is a small, feisty bird with a tail twice as long as its body. Emu-wrens are named for these tails, as the feathers resemble those of an Emu. In 2014, bushfires wiped out all known populations in South Australia, and the Mallee Emu-wren now only occurs in Victoria. Birdlife Australia’s Threatened Mallee Birds program is working to protect existing populations from further decline and establish new, viable populations.
