Abbott’s Boobies, Papasula abbotti, are out on a limb. Their last breeding colony in on Christmas Island, where no more than 3,000 pairs nest on the exposed treetops of the island’s unique rainforest. They feed in tropical waters diving head first to catch fish and quid. Globally endangered, they are threatened by invasive species and mining. BirdLife Australia has declared their island home once of Australia’s Key Biodiversity Areas in need of protection.
